One of my main tasks during Assassins Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok, was to create a kit of lava meshes. Modular in order to be used by artists around the entire world to combine and polish the lava pools.
I was coordinating with the programming team heavily on this one, to communicate and resolve issues with world placement, usage by the artists, performance on console and general pipeline.
Thanks to Stefan Kolchev our main programmer on the feature who was able to create this whole new feature for us.
Lava fall, lava pools and final lava edges to polish and combine the lava flow and cold on the side.
Lava edges were a challenging mesh , as they needed to have both behaviors of lava and non lava at once. As well as visually had to blend with both sides. We used dithering on the edges to blend everything perfectly.
